Jacqueline Steingold was a well-known activist in the areas of women’s rights, social justice, political action, and racial equality. Throughout the years, she was recognized as the Woman of the Year by the Downriver Chapter of the American Association of University Women, a Woman of Achievement from the National Organization for Women (NOW), a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, and the Leadership Award from the City of Detroit Human Rights Commission, among numerous other accolades. Jacquie was the former Executive Director of the Metropolitan Detroit YWCA, the Parkside Intergenerational Center, the Wayne County Youth Assistance Program, and the interim director of AIDS Consortium of SE Michigan. She worked as a Clinician/Educator and Supervisor at Respond, Inc, StarrVista, and Children’s Aid Society, and served as a Legislative Aide to Michigan State Senators Martha G. Scott and Lana Pollack. Jacquie held a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Wayne State University, where she later served as an Adjunct Professor of Social Welfare Policy, Sociology, Marriage and Intimate Relationships, Social Problems, and Social Psychology. She also taught at Wayne County Community College, Marygrove College, Madonna University, and Sienna Heights University. Jacquie was an active member of Temple Emanuel, and her community service leadership positions included NASW and NOW, where she served at the city, state, and national board levels; the National Women’s Political Caucus; the Arab-American Domestic Violence Coalition; and the advisory councils and boards on topics as diverse as sustainable development, AIDS, hospice, child care, and dance. Jacquie’s home was always filled with friends of all ages, races, and religions. She enjoyed travel, reading, political discourse, and following the lives of friends both in person and through social media. A lifelong citizen of Detroit, Jacquie died on Thursday, February 25, 2016, following a long illness. Devoted mother of Joel Steingold, daughter of the late Joseph and Yetta Steingold, and sister of the late Ernie, Willie, and Sandra (Vrono) Steingold, Jacquie is survived by an extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews, and longstanding friends.
