A Mexican writer and journalist, Ángeles Mastreta stands out for her feminine characters: strong and courageous women who take charge of their lives. In 1997 she won the Rómulo Gallegos prize for her novel “Mal de amores”, she was the first woman in 30 years to receive this award. As with most women of her time, what was planned for her life was for her to get married. It was strange that girls continued to study. She wanted to be a teacher, they were the only women she saw free. The headmistress of her school became her life example, doing what she wanted. She moved from her hometown of Puebla to the Mexican capital and enrolled to study journalism at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. There she realized that feminism existed and began writing about abortion or rape. He worked as a journalist and columnist for various newspapers where he addressed the daily life of Mexican culture. She received a scholarship to attend the Literary Workshop of the Mexican Writers Center. Then she served as director of Cultural Diffusion at the National School of Professional Studies (ENEP), directed the Chopo Museum. She was a member of the editorial board of the feminist magazine FEM and the Union of Anti-Machismo Women, of which she was the founder and main organizer. “Tear My Life,” her first novel, she wrote while raising her two young children. It's the story of a woman, of power, and a man who wields it. Women who suffer from it. Catherine, the protagonist of the book, is destined to achieve her emancipation. The work won the Mazatlan Prize for Literature in 1986 and has sold more than three million copies in almost 20 languages. Other titles include “Women with Big Eyes”, “Evil of Love” or “The Wind of the Hours”. Ángeles contributes to foreign newspapers such as Die Welt in Germany, El País in Spain and the Mexican political magazine Nexos. She had also been the spokesperson for the National Network of Women's Shelters, which dealt with victims of domestic violence.
