She earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and later specialized in pediatrics. One of Dr. Gaston's most notable contributions came during her tenure as the Assistant Surgeon General of the United States. Appointed to this position in 1990, she became the first African American woman to serve as a U.S. Surgeon General. In this role, Gaston focused on a range of public health issues, with a particular emphasis on childhood lead poisoning, maternal and child health, and HIV/AIDS prevention. Dr. Gaston's advocacy extended to addressing sickle cell anemia, a genetic disorder that disproportionately affects African Americans. She co-authored the seminal book "Prime Time: The African American Woman's Complete Guide to Midlife Health and Wellness" with her sister, Gayle K. Porter.
