1957 - Today

Date Added:

Zhang Guimei is a remarkable Chinese educator who has dedicated her life to improving female education in China. Born on June 15, 1957, Zhang is the founder and principal of Huaping High School for Girls, which is China's first and only free public high school specifically for girls. Located in a poverty-stricken and mountainous region in southwest China's Yunnan province, the school has transformed the lives of numerous underprivileged girls by providing them with access to education and rewriting their destinies. Zhang, who belongs to the Manchu ethnic group, has faced numerous challenges throughout her journey. She was born into a large family in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang, and faced harsh conditions during her upbringing. Despite these difficulties, she persevered and pursued her passion for education. In 1974, at the age of 17, Zhang joined the "Third Front" initiative and relocated to Zhongdian County (now Shangri-La City) in Yunnan province. There, she began her career as a staff member of the Zhongdian County Forestry Bureau. Zhang's profound dedication to education led her to establish the Huaping High School for Girls. Prior to its founding, she witnessed many girls in the region being forced to abandon their studies due to early marriages or the need to work. Determined to change this situation, Zhang embarked on a mission to raise funds for the school. Through relentless efforts and personal sacrifices, she collected donations from various sources, including individuals, organizations, and government support. In August 2008, Zhang's dream became a reality with the establishment of the Huaping High School for Girls. The school offers free education, including tuition and accommodation, to girls from impoverished backgrounds. Zhang firmly believes that educating girls has a profound impact on future generations. She envisions breaking the cycle of poverty by empowering educated and responsible mothers who will prioritize their children's education. Zhang's achievements have garnered recognition and accolades. She is a member of the Chinese Communist Party and has been a delegate to the 17th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. In 2021, she was awarded the prestigious July 1 Medal by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, honoring her exceptional contributions to education. Zhang Guimei's unwavering commitment to female education and her tireless efforts to uplift disadvantaged girls have made her an inspiration and a role model in China and beyond. Her extraordinary work continues to impact the lives of countless girls, providing them with the opportunity to pursue their dreams and break free from the cycle of poverty.
