My mother graduated from Ethical Culture Fieldston in 1934 and brought that progressive style education to Harlem with her school and camp. She fought racism by training the children to be conversant with the majority Euro-centric culture and proud of their African American one. Her uncle James Weldon Johnson was a member of the Ethical Culture society and her father J. Rosamond Johnson showed her the educational value of music, song and travel
