1948 - Today

Grace Jones is a worldly being who displayed her extravagance from the 1970s through 1990s with her androgynous style that challenged race and gender. Coined as the modern Josephine Baker, she solidified her presence in pop culture with her futuristic outfits and natural flattop hair and unbroken attitude that she would not apologize for. Born in May 1948 in a religious household in Jamaica, Jones felt that her childhood limited her creativity. The restrictions of her family made Jones create fantasies that she controlled. According to her brother Noel Jones, “Grace lived in her own world, created her own space, created her own imaginative games.” Her innovation led her to be a model in Paris in the early 1970s and a disco sensation in New York. Later, Jones made a new path for herself in reggae New Wave rock and reenacted her fierce persona in notable movies like “Vamp,” “Conan the Destroyer,” and the Bond film “A View to a Kill.” Jones’ contribution paved the way for more women in modern pop culture whether in music or fashion and called on us to never be afraid to express our creativeness or take risks, especially for our own happiness.
