Martha Ellis Gellhorn was an American author, travel writer, and journalist who is widely regarded as one of the twentieth century's greatest war journalists. During her 60-year career, Gellhorn covered nearly every major international crisis. From 1940 to 1945, she was the third wife of American novelist Ernest Hemingway. She died in 1998 at the age of 89, unwell and nearly blind, by apparent suicide. Her prize for journalism, the Martha Gellhorn Prize, is named after her.
