Nashar is the first female CEO of Saudi commercial bank, Samba Financial Group. Nashar arrived in the post with 20 years in the banking sector having served as a board member of Samba’s global markets subsidiary and a Pakistani unit. Samba is Saudi Arabia’s third-largest bank by assets with more than $61bn in assets under management. She becomes CEO at a time when Saudi Arabia is beginning to implement reforms that will promote gender equality as part of their Vision 2030. In her time with Samba, she has worked on its merger with United Saudi Bank, oversaw the development of its digital services and then helped the transition to a fully Saudi institution following Citibank’s decision to withdraw its management agreement. Samba Financial Group is Saudi Arabia’s third-largest bank by assets. Rania Nashar graduated from King Saud University with a degree in Computer Science and Technology. Nashar led the bank for nearly four years, where it earned around $2 billion in total operating income in the first nine months of 2020. Last year, it was announced that the bank would merge with the National Commercial Bank to create a new bank worth $223 billion in assets. Nashar stepped down from her role as CEO from January 31, 2021. She serves as the Senior Advisor to the Governor of Saudi’s Public Investment Fund, Yasir Al-Rumayyan. Nashar previously served as a board member for Samba’s global markets subsidiary and has over 20 years of experience in the commercial banking sector. Nashar is also a board member of the Saudi Stock Exchange, Tadawul.
