Jane Fraser is an American banker and executive, the first female CEO of Citigroup. Fraser was born in St. Andrews, Scotland, and reportedly is descended from the Dundas Clan. She studied economics at Cambridge University, and after working for Goldman Sachs and Madrid firm Asesores Bursátiles, which she joined to immerse herself in a new culture and learn a new language, she earned an MBA at Harvard Business School. She began working at McKinsey, a consulting firm, spending time in New York and London. During this period, she had two children with her husband, banker Alberto Piedra. Fraser perceived her time at Goldman and McKinsey as a crucial formative experience, especially in regards to her belief in a strong firm culture of shared trust, which she found was paramount in the partnership systems espoused by both companies. In 2004, she left McKinsey to join Citi as head of client strategy for its investment and corporate banking division, later rising to global head of strategy and mergers and acquisitions in October 2007, appreciating the firm culture she found. When the financial crisis struck with full force in 2008, she was part of the top-level team of executives charged with restructuring the group, leading its re-engineering effort, making divestments, and raising new capital, during which she estimates she made around 40 cross-Atlantic trips. In 2008 the couple decided that Piedra would leave his job at Dresdner Kleinwort to spend more time with them so that Fraser could pursue her goals without worrying about the lack of a parental figure while as she balanced family life with a strenuous career. She would go on to be the CEO of Citi’s Global Private Bank, its Consumer and Commercial Banking branch, and CEO of Citi Latin America in Miami. In 2021, she became Citi’s first female CEO, leading a strong recovery from the COVID-19 Crisis.
