Chelsea Winstanley is a Maori film producer and director. Born and raised in New Zealand, Winstanley is of Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāi Te Rangi ancestry. She started her career by producing films such as the comedy "What We Do in the Shadows", starring her frequent collaborator and former partner Taika Waititi. She also worked on an anthology documentary series "Saving Grace, Te Whakarauora Tangata", which highlighted domestic abuse victims. In 2015, she was awarded the New Zealand Women in Film and Television's Mana Wahine at Wairoa's Maori Film Festival. Winstanley reunited with Waititi with the 2019 film "Jojo Rabbit". However, she has stated that she would like to pivot towards developing female voices in film; “I made a decision that I want to concentrate on working with women, since throughout most of my career I’ve been helping men make movies... I thought, I need to stop doing that in order for us to have some kind of equal representation. And we’re not going to have that unless we all participate in bringing us up.”
