Winona Ryder is an American actress. She is known for her impressive filmography as well as her advocacy. Ryder was born Winona Laura Horowitz in 1971. Her first film role was in “Lucas” at only 15; Tim Burton discovered her in this film and subsequently cast her in “Beetlejuice”. This film launched a career full of critically and commercially successful roles for Ryder. Despite this success, she has also faced problems in the film industry. Ryder was subjected to intense media scrutiny during her 2001 arrest for shoplifting. She has also spoken candidly about her struggles with anxiety and depression. However, Ryder has experienced a resurgence in the past few years with starring roles in series such as “Stranger Things” and “The Plot Against America.” Ryder has also been involved in philanthropic efforts throughout her career, including the American Indian College Fund and the return effort of Polly Klaas. Winona Ryder inspires so many because of her iconic performances as well as her criticism of the stigmatization of mental health.
