Qween Jean

By: Stephanie Farmer | Date Added:

If you’ve been to a New York City stonewall protest in 2020 or 2021 you will likely have been moved by the powerful words of Qween Andy Jean. An icon in and of herself, Qween is a Black Trans woman fighting for the rights of her people. I have had the pleasure of joining some protests where it's difficult for me to decide what moves me more, their stunning outfits or awe-inspiring words. In September 2020 after police arrested 86 protesters who were outraged by the announcement that ICE had been performing hysterectomies on women in detention centers, Qween was the first to grab her bullhorn and go to jail support. She powerfully led us through the street of downtown Manhattan as we chanted like we were praying that Black Lives Matter. She founded the Black Trans Liberation movement in New York City and longs for healing after years and years of endless mistreatment against her community. She is also a prominent costume designer with a Master in Fine Arts from Tisch school for the arts at NYU. She has created incredible and intricate costumes for the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Signature Theatre, and Santa Fe Opera. She is a collaborative multi-talented creator who has a talent for creating beautiful pieces of clothing. Qween Jean has a dynamic presence commanding the streets of New York and getting quiet and emotional. Her use of social media is eye-catching and inspiring to follow. She is a symbol of Black joy, may her story persist and inspire forever.
