THE INSPIRING LIFE OF DELORIS FRIMPONG MANSO Deloris Frimpong Manso is a West African journalist from Ghana. She was born on June 24th, 1982. Deloris’s nickname is “Delay”. She was raised by a single mother, who later passed away during Deloris’s late teens, leaving Delay with only one sibling and responsibilities as a caretaker. Deloris Frimpong Manso’s alma mater is Aburi Girls Senior High School and Methodist University College in Ghana. Delay stood strong through her lowest point in life, and she was determined to make it in life no matter what might come (Wikipedia). Although Deloris Frimpong Manso lost her mother at a very tender age and had to pick up the role of a mother figure in her younger sister’s life, she never gave up on her dream of becoming a journalist. At the age of 17 years in 1999, her career as a journalist started at a local radio station in her hometown Nkawkaw. The radio station is called Life FM. Deloris Frimpong Manso later on furthered her career as a radio presenter in Ghana’s capital Accra. She worked at Top Radio FM and finally established a permanent position at Oman FM in 2007(Wikipedia). Deloris became a household name with her vibrant talk show “The Delay Show”, which is still produced by her and then she launched her second most talked about television show called “Afia Schwarzennager”. The television show features a character that is loosely based on a woman who depends on men and uses them for wealth building. This television show aimed to educate the young women not to depend on men or use them for material acquisition such as buying houses, clothes and cars. Deloris Frimpong Manso strongly believes that it is rewarding when people work hard for what they want in life. In addition, Deloris Frimpong Manso became an entrepreneur and woman activist when she established her career. Deloris Frimpong Manso encourages Ghanian women to never give up in life, no matter what the circumstances may be. She believes in women working hard to get what they want in life not by laying on their backs while men treat them as mere sex objects. She always narrates how she picked herself up after her mother’s death and then rose up to be the breadwinner of her family(Wikipedia). This was her lowest point in life during her late teens into adulthood. Deloris Frimpong Manso is a strong woman because she didn’t allow her past to knock her completely down. Instead, she worked very hard and did not rely on old rich men to feed her, which some Ghanian women are taught to do. Deloris Frimpong Manso used her life testimony to encourage women of many backgrounds in Ghana to work hard. Her advocacy stands strong on changing the perspective of most men and the media that puts out the inaccurate idea that women sleep with rich men in order to be successful. Deloris Frimpong Manso campaigned intensively through her career that women are a force to be reckoned with and resourceful. She changed the idea that women are helpless without a man's aid. Deloris Frimpong Manso is a commited feminist advocate and she does not hide it. Delay is a role model and a very prominent woman in Ghana, who now owns an industrial company that produces Mackerel sardines, spaghetti and canned tomato sauce through investors that she organized after researching on how to start such company. Deloris encourages women in Ghana to have respect for themselves and to start their own businesses as she did (Wikipedia). Deloris Frimpong Manso has received numerous awards for her advocacy on women’s empowerment. She has been awarded with “Women Empowerment Award, Outstanding Woman of the year, and Entrepreneur Of The Year in October 2020”( Wikipedia). These are well-known awards given in Ghana. As an immigrant from Ghana, West Africa, I am inspired by Deloris Frimpong Manso's achievement in life because she was very strong mentally, physically and emotionally during her teenage years when her mother died. Many young women cannot stand strong like she did, so it encourages me and many young women from Ghana to strive for our dreams and never to give up. I have been through many traumatic experiences in life ever since I immigrated to America, and I have always pushed myself to finish school so that I do not depend on a man to live. Deloris Frimpong Manso is a fierce woman who overcame poverty in a country that is heavily male-dominated. In conclusion, despite the adversities she faced, she turned her lemons into lemonade. Although she is a strong feminist, Deloris Frimpong Manso wants to settle down and have a beautiful family. Yes, this statement shocked many Ghanians, especially men, because they believe that a feminist is an angry woman who hates men and will never settle down to have a domestic life. Their assumptions and opinion do not affect Delay at all because she believes that her private life is her pride and joy. She does not allow her critics to bring her down. She believes that we only live once and she encourages women to stand firm and united.
