Dorothy Whiteside was born on March 19, 1905, and expired on June 18, 1985. She was one of the seven founding members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc that was established at Butler University. Young Dorothy Whiteside moved to Indianapolis with her family in 1914. Like most of her sorority co-founders, Soror Hanley graduated from Abram C. Shortridge High School in the year 1922 and entered the Indianapolis Normal School, a teacher’s preparatory school, in 1922. She also took a few classes at Colombia University and Western Reserve in 1922. She then entered the Teachers College of Indianapolis, now Butler University College of Education, eventually obtaining her teaching certificate. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in education from Butler University in 1942. While at the Teachers College, Hanley met the other founders of Sigma Gamma Rho, who instantly became her closest friends. Hanley’s enthusiasm for community building was reflected in her many decades of dedicated service to her students, sorority, city, and family. As an educator, she taught students in nearby North Vernon, Indiana, as well as in Indianapolis. Interestingly, although she loved teaching, she retired from the Indianapolis public schools in 1951, after twenty-five years of service. Her husband, an aspiring businessman, formed the Beard Delivery Service in the early 1950s, seeking greater opportunities for himself and his family, and his business prospered. Motivated by her husband’s good fortune, Soror Whiteside established a millinery shop in the 1950s. “Hats by Dorothy” thrived as sorority sisters, educators, church members, and others patronized her business. Of course, Soror Whiteside remained a loyal supporter of Sigma Gamma Rho, donating some of her profits to the sorority’s many charitable programs that benefited education, civil rights, the poor, and public health. Founder Dorothy Hanley Whiteside is an everlasting Pearl of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (SGRho), one of the four college sororities for African American women, was founded by seven public school teachers at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 12, 1922. SGRho is thus the only Greek-letter organization founded by university graduates rather than undergraduates. It is also the only black Greek-letter sorority founded outside of Howard University. Sorority founders established the first undergraduate chapter in 1929 at Butler University. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was established on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana on the campus of Butler University by seven school teachers: Mary Lou Allison Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie M. Downey Martin, and Cubena McClure. Today Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority has more than 90,000 members in 500 alumnae and undergraduate chapters across the United States, in Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Germany, and South Korea.
