Susan Levitt Stamberg American radio personality. Recipient Honor award Ohio University, 1977 Edward Murrow award Corporation for Public Broadcasting, 1980 named Woman of the Year, Barnard College, 1984 fellow Silliman College Yale University, since 1984; inducted Broadcasting Hall of Fame,1994, Radio Hall of Fame, 1996. One of her most memorable interviews was with Nobel Prize–winning economist Milton Frieman Susan argued with Friedman over the merits of the free market, claiming her conversations with "Russian cabbies" on the streets of New York had showed that the expatriates preferred life in the former Communist country to "how dreadfully tough their lives are here (the United States)." Friedman dismissed Susan observation, contending, "I'm saying if you really want to know what they really believe about the relative merits of the two systems, see what they do, not what they say. And what they do is to stay here. They don't go back. Susan has hosted several series on PBS, moderated three Fred Rogers television specials for adults, served as commentator, guest or co-host on various commercial TV programs, and appeared as a narrator in performance with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. Her voice appeared on Broadway in the Wendy Wasserstein play An American Daughter. Her late husband Louis Stemberg had his career with the State Department's agency for international development. Her son, Josh Stemberg, an actor, appears in various television series, films, and plays. Susan was also the first host of the long-running PBS arts series Alive from Off Center, hosting from 1985 to 1986. Editorial assistant Daedalus, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1960-1962.
