Nancy Marie Lopez is one of the most decorated woman golfers in the US and the world. She has won multiple LPGA tours, championships, and continues to be an inspirational figure in her community. Lopez’s early career was immediately marked by success. She won her fist competition at the New Mexico’s Women’s Amateur at age 12 in 1969. She then proceeded to win the U.S. girl’s junior at 15 and 17. Before Lopez had even entered college her golfing career was marked with tremendous success. Like many historic athletes, she saw her talent when she was young and built it up over time. By 1977 Lopez had won multiple amateur and youth national competitions. She received multiple awards from the University of Tulsa, and by the end of 1977 she left college to start her professional career and was the runner-up in the U.S. Women’s Open. When Lopez entered the world of professional sports her career continued its meteoric rise. From the late 1970s to the early 1980s she was considered one of the best women’s golfers in the world. She won multiple championships, majors, and national events. From 1987 to 2000 she earned over twenty titles for outstanding play and recognition of her talent. She has represented the US at the Olympics, as a player and coach, multiple times, and she has been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame as one of the best women’s golfers of all time. She is also the only women to have earned the titles of rookie of the year, player of the year and the Vare trophy. Her career was truly remarkable. Lopez’s inspiration is not limited to her professional career. She also inspires her local community in The Villages in Florida where she currently lives. Lopez is the organizer and head of an annual golf tournament that works in association with Adventures in Movement. This organization assists and provides services for physically and mentally challenged individuals. Lopez hosts an annual tournament that fundraises for AIM and she works as a national ambassador for the group. Nancy Marie Lopez has served as an inspiration for many young women in the world of sports. Her illustrious career has opened the door for many young women. Lopez’s athletic legacy will remain a staple inspiration in US sports.
