By: Antonio Melville | Date Added:

Aziza al-Yousef is a Saudi Arabian women's rights activist and academic. She was born in 1957 in Saudi Arabia. From a young age, this woman was very, very smart. She attended both King Saud University and Virginia Commonwealth University. Aziza al-Yousef is a woman human rights defender, retired professor, mother of five and grandmother of eight. She is a prominent women’s rights activist who has been working on women’s rights in Saudi Arabia for over two decades. She has repeatedly participated in defying the driving ban and has been harassed and interrogated for her human rights work. In 2016, she delivered a petition signed by 15,000 people to the Royal Court, demanding an end to the male guardianship system. Like many activists,, Aziza has been through a lot to have her dream come true, and it isn’t even over yet. For voicing her rights, she has been detained by the Saudi Arabian government many times. Her charges were: coordinated activity to undermine the security, stability and social peace of the kingdom; contacting international organizations, foreign media and other activists; producing something that harms public order, religious values, public morals, the sanctity of private life, or authoring, sending, or storing it via an information network. She has been detained since May 17, 2018 with many more activists. Many, many people are protesting to have her taken out of prison. She was wronged because she has a right to preach what she believed, but the government abused their power and locked her up. According to testimonies obtained by Amnesty International, a total of ten human rights defenders (including Aziza) were tortured, sexually abused, and subjected to other forms of ill-treatment during their first three months of detention, when they were held in an informal detention facility in an unknown location. And even through all this, she continued fighting for what she believed in. In conclusion, as of now she is on temporary release, and there are many women that are fighting for permanent release. She is one of the bravest women in women’s history and is still fighting to this day. Bibliography https://standwithsaudifeminists.org/learn-more/know-the-activists/azizah-al-yousef/
