Soviet aviator and cosmonaut, second woman in space, to fly to space twice. Svetlana Savitskay born 1948,soviet aviator and cosmonaut was second woman in space after 19 years in space Valentina Tereshkova, In 1982. On 1984 mission she become the first woman to fly to space Twice perform a spacewalk. Her father deputy commander of the Soviet Air defenses and twice a hero of the Soviet Union. Svetlana showed an aptitude for aviation at an early age. She began parachuting at age sixteen. Completed 450 jumps by her 17 Birthday, and become the top spot at World Aerobatic Championships. She set several EAI world records as a pilot. At age 18 she enrolled in Moscow Aviation Institute and she earned Engineering degree. She was worked as flight instructor upon Graduation from MAI. She was 20 when she making solo flight. She Become a Merited Master of Sport of the USSR, with eighteen world Records in aviation and was absolute world champion in aerobic in 1970. She began testing aircraft and has worked with more than twenty aircraft. She was certified for “ Test pilot”, second class. Svetlana was chosen to be part of the second group of female Cosmonauts. She was selected to join the Soviet space program, And began training for work in space. She underwent a complete Course of training for flight missions as cosmonaut - researcher. She become the fifty third cosmonaut and second woman in space In 1982 she and Leonid Popov and Alexander Serebrov flew to dock With Salyut 7 space station. After conducting several experiments they Returned to Earth after mission of seven days.In1984 was her second space flight which she best known. The first woman walked in space. She also became the first woman to enter space twice. They landed on July 1984 after a flight of eleven days. She said “When watching the Earth from Over. there, one can see the results of human activities , not just beautiful Bluish habitable planet, but because one can see just how habitable it is, With all of its, with all of its floodlit streets and avenues, and its huge Cities. One can see this both at night and in the daytime. When in orbit Thinks of the whole of the ear the, rather than of one’s country, as one’s home”. She was scheduled to be the commander of an all female crew To the Salyut 7 for International women’s Day, but the mission was Cancelled. Svetlana returned to Earth took an executive position at the Aerospace design bureau Energeia. In 1993 she retired from the cosmonaut cor. She turn into politics, and In 1987 she was elected to the Duma as a member of communist party. She remained active in the Duma through out the reforms of the 1990’s. In 2003 she had fourth highest position in the communist party. She Served as the deputy chairperson for the Duma’s defense committee and Won reelection to her seat in 2007. She had such an illustrious record Breaking career both as talented pilot and skilled cosmonaut that she did Just as mush to break down barriers of women as those who came before And deserves an extra special mention on international Women’s day. In 1970 the British press gave her nickname of” Miss Sensation” after She and her team become the world champions in aerobatics. Some of Her records still stand to this day. Awards: Pilot cosmonaut of the USSR, medal for merit in space Exploration, order of the badge of honor.
