Soviet microbiologist notable for independently synthesizing penicillin for the Soviet military during War ll She was member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. Zinaida Yermolyeva one of the few women to rise to the top of the Soviet Scientific pyramid she began Her career in 1921 during the infancy of the Soviet State As a researcher working at the Northernize Caucasus Bacteriological Institute . She create near miracles of public health reform. Her work was brought to attention, and 1925 she began working as researcher at the Baksh Biochemical Institute. By 1930 she had also became a leading researcher in the all Union Institute of experimental of the USSR, where she concentrated on discovering and preparing for clinical use, new therapies for Infections diseases. She became a noted expert on choler and, as early 1931 was able to create a new Treatment for infectious diseases, lysozyme. During World war ll, her two decades of intensive research In the area of infectious diseases was harnessed to the immediate strategies needs of Soviet Union Fighting for its existence against a brutal Nazi. As an authority on human intestinal infections, she Directed the efforts to provide germ free water from the Volga river for the city’s Soviet defenders. Her efforts helped to maintain the health of soldiers. She ampules of bacteriophage witch helped Restore to health soldiers who had became infected with cholera. She felt immense pressure during World War ll to quickly develop more effective treatments for the septic. She working to find one that Was effective against infections bacteria. She hoped to quickly find and isolate a culture that would Be effective in ordinary medical practice. One day she noticed some mold growing in a crack of the Shelter’s wall. She took a sample to laboratory and miraculously discovered the effect that she had so Long hoped for, and what appeared to be a promising new medicine. She took charge of the facility that Manufactured Soviet penicillin on a mass produced basis. in 1943 she received the State Prize of the USSR and over the years received many other award. Elected a corresponding member of USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1945 she was named an Monored Scientific worker of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic. Memories of her powerful and tenacious personality also continued to resonate in the literature of the history of Soviet medical research. Zenaida Yermolyeva professor and member of USSR Academy of Medical Sciences died at 77 years In 1974.
