Ruchi Sanghvi was born on January 20th 1982 in Pune, India. When she was young, she thought she would join her father’s business after her education. Ruchi earned her bachelor’s and master’s in electrical computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. She became an Indian computer engineer who was the first female engineer hired by Facebook. She then founded her company, Cove and sold the company to join Dropbox as Vice President of Operations. She founded a new business, South Park Commons in 2016 and made many contributions as an philanthropist. Once Ruchi graduated from the university in 2004, she initially wanted to work in New York City but was horrified from the lack of space. So she settled in Silicon Valley and first worked at Oracle Corporation. By next year she started working at Facebook and was one of the main employees working on the “News Feed” function which was launched in September 2006. Although the “News Feed” notified current events of friends and such, Ruchi and the team received much criticism and backlash as there was an issue with people’s privacy being leak. Ruchi continued to work in Facebook and was the product leader for Facebook Platform in 2006. Ruchi left Facebook and started her own company, Cove, in 2011. By next year, Dropbox bought the company and appointed Ruchi as Vice President of Operations whose responsibilities are managing products, marketing, communications and other functions. In 2013, she left Dropbox but retain an advisory role at the company. By 2016, Ruchi founded South Park Commons in San Francisco. The organization function like a hackerspace which was a space for people of common interest to network and share knowledge. The space would be used as a workshop, presentations, lectures, and even game nights and parties. Ruchi used a townhouse that can fit 20 to 30 people at a time. Ruchi’s new venture was successful and earned her 40 million dollars in 2018. Ruchi also became an investor and advisor for a number of Silicon Valley companies. As a philanthropist, she was one of the founders of FWD.us, which was a lobbying group in Silicon Valley that promoted immigration reforms, improve education, and technological breakthroughs in the United States. She desired to see Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) thrive and give better opportunities for immigrants. Ruchi is an inspirational woman as she not only major in a field that is predominantly male, she was the first female engineer to be hired by Facebook and worked with other big companies. She is very intelligent and founded two companies that are worth plenty. She served high positions and was an advisor and investor. Other than her accomplishments, she believes in higher learning and promotes STEM to advance the world to further innovations and desires better treatment of immigrants who seek the American dream like she has.
