Kirron Anupam Kher was born on the 14th of June in 1955 into an Indian Punjabi Jat Sikh family. She grew up in Chandigarh, India. Her birth name was Kiran Thakar Singh and her parents called her by Kiran. She has other nicknames like Kiron and Kirron that she currently goes by now. She changed her name to Kirron as she believes in numerology and Kirron is based on that belief. Kirron was known for Indian theatre, film, television and is an actress, singer, entertainment producer, talk show host and lastly a member of the lower house of Indian Parliament in Chandigarh. She was also part of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the most renowned political party in India. Kirron also had siblings, one brother and two sisters. Her brother was also an artist but died in 2003. One of her sisters was a Arjuna award winning badminton player and her other sister was the wife of a retired senior officer in the Indian Navy. Kirron was educated in a Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh during her teenage years. She then graduated from the Department of Indian Theatre of Panjab University. After college she met Gautam Berry who was a Mumbai businessman and had one son, Sikandar Kher. She experienced hardship throughout the 1980s in the film industry. During her time communicating with producers for roles in film, she renewed her college acquaintance with Anupam Kher who was also struggling to find work in the same field. Together they were eventually able to find a play called, “Chandpuri Ki Champabai”. With the success from Anupam thereafter, Kirron divorced her husband. Kirron made her first debut in 1983 with “Aasra Pyar Da” which she took a hiatus afterwards till 1996. She did appear in another film with her second husband, Anupam Kher for a small role. After her hiatus, she did a play and then hosted three television shows. In one of her shows, she had discussions about sexuality and women’s issues. Thereafter she was able to be in Hindi films and continue on to the mid 2000s. Kirron is a social-political activist. She participated in non-profit movements like Laadli,a a campaign against female infanticide and Roko Cancer, campaign for awareness of cancer. She joined the Bhartiya Janata Party in 2009 and campaigned for the political party in 2011. The political party also declared her as Lok Sabha candidate from Chandigarh for the General Elections in 2014. She won the seat and her first idea was to make a film to represent Chandigarh. She won another term in 2019 with the support of her political party. Kirron was an inspiration to me as she went through hardship in her early career like I did. I can empathize with the difficulties of finding a job and going through hardship with almost no money. I also admired her involvement to help others and feminist activism. She shows that she is against female infanticide with her participation with Laadli and she supports the cure for cancer. I liked that she has her platform to discuss sexuality and talks about women’s issues. It is also a great feat that she was an entertainer and then became a member of Indian Parliament. She now plays a part in the Indian government and I hope she continues to support women and ensure her country progresses.
