Katrina Kaif

1983 - Today

By: Asha Kapadia | Date Added:

Katrina Kaif was born Katrina Turquotte on July 16, 1983 in Hong Kong by her father, Mohammed Kaif, who is a British businessman of Kashmiri descent, and her mother Suzanne, who is an English lawyer and charity worker. She has three elder sisters, three younger sisters, and one elder brother. When Katrina was a child, her parents divorced, and her father moved to the United States. Katrina lost contact with her father and was raised by her mother. Katrina’s mother wanted to devote her life to social causes, which resulted in the family relocating to numerous countries. Katrina and her siblings were home-schooled by tutors due to the constant moving. Katrina participated in beauty contests, was a professional model, and she is best known as an English actress in Hindi films. Katrina won a beauty contest in Hawaii when she was fourteen years old and began modeling in a jewelry campaign. During this time, she was also modeling for other agencies in London and appeared regularly at London Fashion Week. In 2003, she gained recognition for modeling after walking at the India Fashion Week and eventually was endorse by brands like Coca-Cola, LG, Fevicol, and Samsung. She had a successful career as a model. During her modeling, she had an opportunity to do a English-Hindi film, “Boom” which was her first film. The film was a huge failure but it didn’t affect her status as a model. It did however cause the directors to be hesitant in hiring her as her Hindi was really poor. Katrina took Hindi classes to address the issue. The following year, Katrina starred in the Telugu film, “Malliswari” in which she earned the highest salary for a South Indian actress at that time. However, she received negative reviews for her performance. In 2005, Katrina achieved success after starring in “Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?” and earned a Stardust Award for Breakthrough Performance - Female. Katrina continued her career in films and noted that she starred in four successful Bollywood films in 2007. Her career in acting was mediocre and at times her voice was dubbed due to her lack of fluency in Hindi and other Indian languages. However in 2009, she did the film, “New York” which received critical acclaim and earned Katrina her first Filmfare Award Nomination for Best Actress. Aside from acting, Katrina participated in Relief Projects India, which is a charitable trust runed by her mother to rescue young girls and prevent infanticide. Katrina also donated her winnings from game shows to her mother’s orphanage. She recorded an album of nursery rhymes, “Rhyme Skool” to raise money for a new school in Madurai. Furthermore, she raised breast and cervical cancer awareness and gave gifts to cancer survivors at the Cancer Patients Aid Association. Katrina Kaif is an inspiration as she became an adult at an early age. She was a successful model and a mediocre actress but her failures were overcome with her dedication and desire to be better. She put in the time to improve in languages and she never gave up. She took every opportunity that presented itself. I am also impressed with her charitable work as she follows her mother’s goal. She has contributed to promoting education, female empowerment, and medical advancement.
