The Life of Moe By Nisha Samuels Moet Anglin, a woman known only by a few, has inspired so many. She is a woman of many talents and capabilities. Ms. Anglin first made her first impression on the world on March 31, 1988, when she was born in The Bronx, during an era in which soul music was very popular. She is not only respected by the community, but She has become an inspiration to the youth across The Bronx. Moet has always been an inspiration to me, along with other students that were fortunate to have her as a teacher. She inspired me to express myself and stand up for what we believe is right. Growing up, Ms. Anglin lived in a female-dominated home, raised by her mom. Her mother took care of the house while providing for both her and her brother financially. Her brother played a big role influencing her and guiding her through life. He was the one person who took on a father figure position and motivated her to explore and experience the world as it was. Most importantly, Moet’s brother would give her the opportunity to experience, at a very young age what college would be like and how to take the first steps into entering the “real world”. Even though her father was never in the picture, she still made life work for her, with the help of those around her. Due to her father’s absence and significant events occurring in her life, she learned many life skills from her mom and brother that would eventually assist her in adapting in all real-life situations, while simultaneously breaking any potential intersectional stereotypes, specifically as a woman of color, with a rather unique, yet poetic name. Moet was always taught to aim higher than others expected for her in life. Her well-driven personality was mainly portrayed in her early years of education. For example, during her elementary school years at P.S.106, she learned to take on the role of a Girl Scout member, as well as taking part in Student Council and becoming a member of the National Ambassador’s Association. During her middle school years, she joined numerous clubs such as step dance, which, in fact, sparked her current interest in dancing. She also received quite a number of Honor Roll and Club 90 awards. For college, Moet attended Herbert H. Lehman College; and even after switching her major a few times, this is where she received her Bachelor’s in English Literature and double minored in Middle and High School education and Business Management. By the end of all of this, she ended college on the Dean’s List. Due to her hard work in her education career, she was often rewarded with numerous things in life, from rewards to countless opportunities, of which she is very much proud. Eventually, as time went on, she started to take on an ample amount of roles in her life. The first and most important role that she encountered as a growing adult was becoming a mother. This was the most difficult stage in her life because she became a teen mom at 18 years old. She was only steps away from attending the dream college of her choice. However, it was decided by Moet herself that she would set her dreams aside to give birth and raise her first and only born. She took the role of being a mom seriously by reading books and learning what should be known for each stage of the baby’s development from within the womb to the toddler phase. In a way, her sacrifices made her the best mother to her daughter Niyah, who happened to take on many traits of her mother. Moet is not only an outstanding mother, but she is also an inspiring and compassionate teacher. I was fortunate enough to be one of her students in the high school I attended. Ms.Moet Anglin is one of the few teachers that I've encountered in my life that I strongly believe cares about her students not only on an academic level but also on an emotional and personal level. Entering high school at the time was a very horrifying concept for me because I had many insecurities and problems that prevented me from being confident around other people. However, thanks to Ms. Moet Anglin, I was able to build up my self-esteem and be confident in who I am. She would often read books to my class that would be relatable to her students to keep them engaged. Overall, I was taught to not be afraid of judgment from others. She is passionate about the many dilemmas that young people in America are facing or have faced. She uses her passion as a writer and a poet in order to engage the lives of the youth she teaches. For example, she helps her students express their emotions in the form of spoken word or blackout poetry. To this current day, she still works as a high school teacher, inspiring other young people, like me, to set their expectations high. She also has devoted time to participate in spoken word events and has been given the opportunity to publish her work in one of the many books created by Beautiful Minds United, which is a spoken word and poetry organization that gives aspiring poets an opportunity for their work to be recognized to the public. Although Moet already has accomplished so much and inspired so many, her dreams and aspirations don’t stop where she is currently in life. Her dreams and aspirations consist of becoming a well-known author, and acknowledged educator, and as she told me herself, “ a fierce yet subtle force to be reckoned with!” She would also love to open up a community center in which she can relate to and provide extra educational/recreational resources for people in the urban environment at a free/low-cost rate. Despite any setbacks that have come to her across her life, none of it seems [ed] to have stopped her from chasing her dreams.
