Margaret Behan

1948 - Today

Date Added:

Margaret Behan is a Native American woman who is Southern Arapaho-Cheyenne and Northern Arapahoe/Northern Cheyenne. She is a former member of the International Council of 13 Grandmothers, an international alliance of indigenous female elders that focuses on issues such as the environment, internationalism, and human rights. Margaret suffered from alcohol addiction as a young woman. She felt that she drank to fit in with her friends, fortunately able to recover with the help of addiction clinics and grandparent’s ceremonies. As a result, she trained to be a substance abuse counselor, leading retreats for children and co-dependents of alcoholics to help other First Nation people that had found themselves in a similar position. Margaret is the founder of The Cheyenne Elders Council, formed in 2007-2008, with Behan as the sole member, with a mission to heal oppression. This was after she heard that Cheyenne youth would have to save themselves, not receiving any influence of teaching from the elders. One project The Cheyenne Elders Council helped to create is the T’sistsistas’s Sacred School, where healers of the tribe will teach Cheyenne healing methods to the tribe’s youth.
