Isabel Cabanillas was a Mexican artist and activist. She worked hard on her art, promoting it on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Her art was a combination of modern memes, American pop culture, and included the Latinx identity. Isabel was a member of a local feminist organization called “Las Hijas de Sus Maquilera Madre” (Daughters of the Maquila Working Mothers). Isabel was a very active member of this feminist organization. She participated publicly by attending multiple women’s marches. She used her artistic talent as both a coping method and as a voice to speak up about the injustices Mexican women deal with. She also gave back to the community in many ways. She spent a lot of her time during the winter of 2019 giving a collection of food, blankets, and clothing to immigrants who were in need. Isabel helped promote and organize events that would support migrants and women like warm-clothing drives, benefit concerts, and benefit marches. Protests sparked in Mexico after news of Isabel’s death had been released to the press. She was found dead on January 20th in downtown Ciudad Juárez. Protestors demonstrated fiercely against both femicide, the murder of a women because of her gender, and against authorities. There have been many protests from women in Ciudad Juárez including a national event that was organized on January 25th which served as both a memorial to Isabel and as a cry for justice for Isabel and other women like her.
