Lyda D. Newman was an African American inventor. Lyda was only 14 years old when she innovated the hairbrush to improve it. Lyda was the third African American woman to receive a patent, using her hairbrush design for the families she worked for as a private hairdresser. Her version of the hairbrush utilized synthetic bristles instead of animal hair, which made the brush more durable, easier to clean, and more water resistant. Lyda also thought to make the bristles detachable to allow for easy cleaning and allowed her to save time switching brush heads between clients. Due to her innovations, more women were able to afford hairbrushes. In addition to being an inventor, Lyda was an activist for women’s rights to vote and participate in office. She was one of the main organizers of an African American branch of the Women’s Suffrage Party where she was an instrumental part in the women’s rights movement, raising awareness and encouraging people to attend meetings in her area.
