Amy Winehouse

1983 - 2011

By: | Date Added:

Singer-Songwriter Amy Winehouse first gained popularity for her music, combining different types of jazz, soul, and R&B. Winehouse entered the music industry at age 16, when a classmate passed her demo onto his label and earned her a record deal. Her debut album, “Frank” received massive praise for its mixture of genres and styles, and her unique vocal quality. The success of her first album led to several award nominations/wins, and a double platinum status. As her career began to take off, Winehouse publicly developed alcohol abuse issues, causing her management and family to suggest she join a rehabilitation program. Her refusal led to growing substance abuse, and her song “Rehab”, which became a hit single in and around the United Kingdom. While her reputation and substance abuse led to legal trouble and rehabilitation programs, Winehouse continued to create music and increase her popularity with her loyal, dedicated audience. Winehouse won five Grammy awards for her music, tying with Beyoncé Knowles for the most Grammy wins by a female artist in one night. In 2011, after a long battle with substance abuse, Winehouse passed away due to alcohol poisoning, at the age of 27. The tragedy of her early death was heartbreaking to not only her friends and family, but also her fans and colleagues. Musician Kelly Clarkson expressed her grief, stating “She was a beautiful and talented girl. I’m angry. What a waste of a gifted person.” Amy Winehouse’s honesty and openness were an inspiration to those around her; she is still remembered for her groundbreaking success as a female artist and she continues to influence the music industry to this day.
