Anna Zenger was the first to publish a newspaper article in America. Anna had fled from Germany and grew up around in England. Her husband was John Peter Zenger who was a New York Journal Printer. In 1733 he became the publisher of the New York Weekly Journal, which was originally started by citizens and lawyers to state that Governor Cosby had mistreated his powers. John was in jail for "seditious libel" in 1734 saying that he had criticized the British governor in his journals and to stop him they would keep him longer in jail to stop any more publications from happening. Anna Zenger had 5 children at that time but continued to write for 9 month's and was considered not guilty verdict for her husband in 1735. The governor had ordered copies of the newspaper article to be burned. When Zenger went to jail around in 1734 for about 8 months , he was possibly going to face a death sentence. Anna started to write the articles and have them posted every Monday and she would bring the articles to John when he was in jail and he would edit them in his cell. The publications that had continued to have helped John's cause. In 1735, they claimed that John was not guilty, Zenger was made known as someone as a right to print the truth because Zenger was printing the truth in the journals and this was known in the court. John would publish journals until his recent death in 1746, then Anna became the publisher of the weekly journal in 1748 then she had turned it to her oldest son John.
