Leona Helmsley was a successful New York real estate agent. She became president of Helmsley Hotels in 1980 and became known as the “Queen.” When she married the “real-estate tycoon” Harry Helmsley he had a $5 billion real estate empire that included apartment buildings, commercial properties, hotels, and managing the Empire State Building in New York City. Shortly after, she was convicted of mail fraud and tax evasion in 1989. She received a four year sentence and served 21 months in prison. During her long trial there was a testimony that stated that the “Queen” had terrorized executive and menial help in her hotels and homes. After, that she became known as the “Queen of Mean.” She died of heart failure on August 20, 2007. In her will, she left $12 million to her dog while leaving nothing to her grandchildren. However, in 2008, the judge granted the grandchildren $6 million and gave Leona’s dog $2 million. On April 2009, Leona’s trustees distributed her fortune by donating $136 million to different charities and giving $1 million to her dog.
