Barbara Walters was born on September 25, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in English in 1954 from the Sarah Lawrence College. She got a job at the National Broadcasting Company’s New York affiliate, NBC where she became a producer and writer. Her incomparable experience in filming, writing, editing, and research earned her a job as news and public affairs producer for Columbia Broadcasting System, also known as CBS where she wrote scripts for many personalities who appeared on the CBS morning show. However, she ended up leaving the company and joined NBC’s “Today girl.” She later on worked on ABC’s 20/20 program with Hugh Downs. She has interviewed Fidel Castro, Great Britain’s former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Iraq’s President Sadaam Hussein, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Vice President Al Gore, Vice President Bush, Robert Blake, and many more. She has interviewed every first lady and American President since Richard Nixon. She was the first American journalist to interview Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and the first to interview Vice President Bush after the 9/11 attack. In September 2004, she decided to leave the show and started her “Barbara Walters Specials.” She is the first woman to co-host ABC News and has single handedly interviewed more politicians, celebrities, dignitaries, and regular people than any other journalist in history. Walter is also the co-owner and co-executive producer of the 2003 Daytime Emmy Award winning show “The View.” Her achievements have been recognized with many awards including the Induction into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Hall of Fame where she was acknowledged for being “television’s most respected interviewers and journalists.” Throughout her career she has received many awards including the Lowell Thomas Award for a career in journalism excellence by Marist College in 1990, the President’s Award in 1988, Women’s Project and Productions in 1993, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007, and accomplished so many more milestones. She has been credited with the raising status of women journalists and has inspired many. She has currently renewed her contract with ABC and is currently the highest paid anchor worldwide.
