Mary Galloway

1842 - 1881

Date Added:

Mary Galloway was a women soldier who fought in the Civil War. She disguised herself as a man and joined her boyfriend Lieutenant Harry Barnard of the Third Wisconsin. In the Battle of Antietam, Mary was wounded and was treated by a female nurse named Clara Barton who realized she was a woman. Mary then returned to Frederick where she waited for her boyfriend. Later on they reunited and got married. Women during this time were taking on masculine duties which challenged the characteristics of the 19th century woman.
