Asma Jahangir was a human rights lawyer and leading Pakistani rights activist in a country where liberal voices have been continuously under threat. She was the founder of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and served as the United Nation rapporteur on human rights and extrajudicial killings. She also strongly advocated judicial reform and was the first female president of the Pakistan Supreme Court’s Bar Association. Having a civil servant and left wing politician as a father, Jahangir was exposed to politics and activism at an early age. She received her B.A. from Kinnaird College, Lahore and her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Punjab University. Jahangir also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, Queens University, Canada Simon Fraser University, Canada and Cornell University, the United States. Jahangir’s activism was widely respected internationally, but she faced strong criticism from the military and right-wing nationalists,receiving multiple death threats. She was also accused of being an Indian agent, after she advocated peace with India. Her activism was focused strongly on Pakistan’s minorities and women’s rights. She died at the age of 66 from a heart attack.
