Sue Simmons was a legendary news anchor who was known for being the lead female anchor at WNBC news in New York City from 1980-2012. Simmons was a pioneer in television jounalism. She was known by many as an iconic anchorwoman and named a "Black Media Legend" at the Plaza Hotel Friday. Simmons stepped down from her career when her contract with WNBC expired and would not be renew. In 1961, Simmons graduated from Julia Richman High School in the upper east side of Manhattan and decided to work and skip college. Simmons made $5 million a year as one of the highest paid anchor in New York City. She also appeared on some episodes of television series and films. Simmons was on WNBC with her long time on-air partner, Chuck Scarborough. They both received an Emmy for their outstanding single newscast on a Swissair jet from JFK that crashed off Nova Scotia, killing 229 people in 1998.
