Rosetta "Mother" Gaston was a black historian known for making black history more accessible to communities. Part of this work resulted in her founding the Brownsville chapter of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now known as the Association for Study of Afro-American Life and History, the sponsor of Black History Month) in 1943.
