Sandra Ung

1974 - Today

By: Madeleine Biscardi | Date Added:

Sandra Ung was born on September 9th, 1974 in Taiwan, but she immigrated to New York when she was seven to avoid the Cambodian genocide. Ung grew up in Flushing, NY, and earned her J.D. from Columbia Law School. Prior to her role on the New York City Council, she worked as an attorney to aid survivors of domestic abuse. She serves on the 20th Council District of New York City and works to defend and support domestic abuse survivors, women, immigrants, and younger generations of New Yorkers. She joined the New York City Council in 2022 and secured the role of Chair of the Committee of Government Operations. During her current 2024-2025 term, she has introduced 20 bills in the interest of her community, like increasing the civil penalty for repeated littering and creating intake centers for unhoused families with children. These bills help the environment as well as give shelter to those who need it. Not only is Ung working towards bettering New York City, one bill at a time, but she also cares deeply for her family: she lives next door to her parents and serves as their primary caretaker. She’s a very motivational woman who shows that meaningful change starts with caring—both about her city and those closest to her heart.
