Julie Won was born on April 17th, 1990 in South Korea. Her family immigrated to Queens in 1998. Julie grew up in Long Island and attended Hewlett High School. Won represents the 26th district in Western Queens, working mostly in the technology sector and is the first immigrant and woman in New York history for this district. Before becoming a politician, Won worked as a consultant in the International business machines corporation and in October 2020, she announced her campaign for Jimmy Van Brammer’s spot in the 26th district of New York. Won said that the issues that arised from COVID-19 for her family were one of the main reasons she started her campaign, she focuses on issues with technology and making the city cleaner and safer. She ran against 14 opponents and beat them, securing her spot as a representative for the 26th district. Now, in the council, Ms. Won introduced many bills as an advocate for her district’s residents. For example, she proposed legislation requiring police department transparency in the use of surveillance technology, so people are aware of when they are being recorded.Won also sponsored legislation like penalties for improper waste placement on sidewalks and curbs, ensuring garbage is ready for pickup and helping keep New York’s streets clean. Julie Won is an inspiration to many people because she is committed to helping create a stronger, safer, and healthier community. As stated in her biography on the New York Council website, “Julie is working towards true equity in the neighborhoods she serves, ensuring that existing communities will have the support and backing to remain sustainable and affordable for generations to come.” (https://council.nyc.gov/julie-won/)
