Josseline Black (b. March 12, 1987) is a writer, curator, musician, and researcher based in Lisbon, Portugal after a decade based in Austria. Black is responsible for International editorial partnerships for Umbigo Magazine, and founder of Verge! Journal for feminist thought through embodied language. She is the former curator of international artistic residency, Atelierhaus Salzamt (Linz) . As a curatorial collaborator with Galeria Foco (Lisbon), Zeller van Almsick (Vienna), Galeria Madragoa (Lisbon), and General Expenses (Mexico City), she aims to generate public programs and texts which align with the values of social inclusion and transparency. Often writing for Flashart magazine, Droste Effect, Interartive, Electra Magazine, and others, Black engages with editorial frameworks as a means of respecting the analog parameters of ethical communication. In addition, she is a Ph.d candidate in Artistic Studies in the Art and Mediation department of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with the declared thesis: “The revolution in the translation of real time: voice and writing in time-based media within contemporary artistic production”. As a Graduate of University of Art and Industrial Design Linz, Time-based media (M.A.), and the University of California Los Angeles, Anthropology (B.A.), Black pursues through academic investigation that social science and art are interdependent, linked, and symbiotic. She is the founder and director of the trans-disciplinary arts festival NOVO Festival, which takes place across Lisbon, Portugal annually and aims to remap the city through sharing practices between visual art, dance, literature, and music. Prima, which is a music project dedicated to the collective in each of us, is also the Black’s alter ego, and platform for artistry and the distribution of text and music as environments for political engagement. Above all, having worked with artists for the past 17 years in a variety of ways, Josseline Black maintains that art saves lives and shapes the world as a territory for the expansion of selfhood and critical thinking.
