Jacqueline du Pre was known as one of the greatest cellists of the 20th Century. Born in Oxford, England, Jacqueline earned recognition winning many fellowships and awards. She was a student of the famous master cellist Pablo Casals. Jacqueline made her formal debut at Wigmore Hall in London playing Elgar's Cello Concerto at the age of 16. She received international praise in 1965 when Jacqueline made her American debut at Carnegie Hall. Her friendship with world -famous musicians Yehudi Menuhin, Itzhak Perlman, Zubin Mehta, Pinchas Zuckerman and her marriage to Daniel Barenboim inspired many unforgettable chamber music performances. Barenboim said that Jacqueline's playing had extraordinary intuition. Jacqueline's dream ended the early 1970s when she began to lose sensitivity in her fingers. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1973, stopped performing but took up teaching. Jacqueline died in 1987. People still have the deepest admiration for Jacqueline du Pre's musical gift due to her incomparable technique and virtuosity. Her recordings have been remastered so generations to come can enjoy her artistry.
