Soheila Golestani is an Iranian actress, writer and film director. She can be described as masterful, fearless and devoted. Golestani played the character of Najmeh on the film The Seed of the Sacred Fig (A controversial and illuminating piece that starts with the following words appearing on a black screen: "This film was made in secret. When there is no way, a way must be made.") Najmeh is the mother and moral compass of the family. Golestani subtly conveys the struggles and limitations of being female in the repressive Iranian regime. Her performance is pivotal in illustrating the perils of being a citizen painfully divided between believing in the old order and witnessing and being moved by the youth's fervent desire for freedom. Some of the artists and creators of this film faced negative repercussions for their work which, all things considered, is poignant evidence of the impact this work had on the zeitgeist.
