Margaret Storm Jameson was an English writer, known for her novels, criticism and poetry as well as a well received autobiography, Journey to the North. Born in 1891 to a North Yorkshire family of shipbuilders, Jameson studied at the University of Leeds, later moving to London, where she earned an MA in European Drama from King's College London in 1914. She published her first novel, The Pot Boils, in 1919. Her dissertation on Modern Drama in Europe was published in 1920 to critical acclaim. It expressed her interest in European literature and her sense of its impact on Britain. She went on to write 48 novels, three autobiographies, several screenplays, poetry, and many articles for national and international publications Jameson was President of the English branch of PEN International from 1938 until ill-health forced her to retire in 1944, During her time as president she founded the PEN Refugee Writers Fund, which helped hundreds of refugee writers and their families to flee occupied Europe during World War Two. She passed away in 2017.
