Ada Limón is an accomplished American poet, born on March 28, 1976, in Sonoma, California. On July 12, 2022, she was appointed as the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States, making history as the first Latina to hold this prestigious title. Limón's love for poetry blossomed during her high school years, even though she was heavily involved in theatrical productions. She pursued her passion for theater at the University of Washington, later earning her MFA in poetry from New York University in 2001. Her career began to gain recognition with the publication of her first poetry collection, Lucky Wreck (2005), which won the Autumn House Poetry Prize. Limón has since published several more collections, including The Carrying (2018), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry. She has also been honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship and was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2023. Limón has been an influential voice in contemporary poetry, known for her deeply personal and evocative work that often explores themes of identity, nature, and the human experience. Her poem "In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa" was engraved on NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft, set to explore Jupiter's moon Europa. Ada Limón currently divides her time between Lexington, Kentucky, and Sonoma, California, where she continues to write and inspire others through her teaching. Married to Lucas Marquardt, she remains a powerful and resonant voice in the world of poetry, continually shaping the literary landscape with her insightful and moving work. Limón was recently honored as one of TIME's women of the year and she dedicated her award to women artists across the world.
