Mariam Naficy is an American entrepreneur known for her work in the online retail space. She is the co-founder and board chairman of Tonic.xyz, a fine art NFT gallery and community focused on generative art collections. Before Tonic.xyz, Mariam made her mark as the CEO and founder of Minted, a trend-setting online design marketplace. She also founded one of the first online cosmetic retailers, Eve.com, in 1998, which received widespread acclaim from media outlets like Fortune Magazine and CNN for its innovative site architecture. Mariam Naficy was born to Iranian and Chinese parents, who were Georgetown University graduates and she was stationed abroad throughout Africa and the Middle East due to her parent’s work as a United Nations development economist. Growing up in six countries, including Egypt, Tanzania, and Iran, she had a global upbringing. Mariam earned a degree in political science from Williams College and later pursued an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1998. While in business school, she authored The Fast Track: The Insider's Guide to Winning Jobs in Management Consulting, Investment Banking, & Securities Trading, which sold 50,000 copies. Her career began as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs. At the age of 28, she co-founded Eve.com, which was later sold for $110 million to Idealab in 2000. Mariam then led project management at Movielink, a consortium including major studios like Sony Pictures and Warner Brothers, which was one of the first downloadable movie services. In 2004, she became Vice President and General Manager at The Body Shop, where she launched their first e-commerce business. In 2008, Naficy founded the online stationery store Minted.com. Despite initial struggles, Minted eventually grew to 400 employees by 2019. The company raised $208 million in 2018, marking the largest funding transaction that year involving a startup led by a female founder. Mariam currently serves on the Board of Directors of Minted, Medium, Victoria's Secret, and Every Mother Counts. She is also a Trustee of Williams College and a member of the Advisory Council of Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Today, Mariam is married to Michael Mader, who also works at Minted, and they have two children.
