Emily Weiss, born on March 22, 1985, is an American businesswoman known for founding the cosmetics company Glossier and the beauty blog Into the Gloss. Raised in Wilton, Connecticut, Weiss interned at Ralph Lauren during high school and briefly pursued modeling. She graduated from New York University in 2007 with a degree in studio art and went on to work as a fashion assistant at W magazine and Vogue, where she assisted renowned stylist Elissa Santisi. In 2010, Weiss launched 'Into the Gloss', a blog that featured interviews with women discussing their beauty routines and favorite products. The blog quickly gained a following, with its popular "Top Shelf" series showcasing the beauty secrets of well-known personalities like Jenna Lyons and Karlie Kloss. By early 2012, Into the Gloss had amassed over 200,000 monthly visitors. The blog's success led Weiss to leave her position at Vogue and focus entirely on her own business. In 2014, Weiss founded Glossier, a direct-to-consumer beauty brand, with the vision of creating a line of skincare and makeup products inspired by the conversations on Into the Gloss. She initially faced challenges in securing investment, however, with persistence and the support of venture capitalist Kirsten Green, Weiss secured $2 million in seed funding. Glossier launched its first products in October 2014, gaining widespread attention and quickly becoming a disruptive force in the beauty industry. Under Weiss's leadership, Glossier continued to grow, and was valued at $1.2 billion in 2019. Despite its success, Glossier faced criticism in 2020 when former employees accused the company of not adequately supporting its Black workers. In May 2022, Weiss stepped down as CEO, transitioning to the role of executive chairwoman. Weiss was featured in Forbes' 30 Under 30 list in 2015 and Time magazine's "Next 100" in 2019. Through her innovative approach to beauty and entrepreneurship, Weiss has left an indelible mark on the industry, making Glossier a loved brand for many.
