Anne E. Wojcicki, born on July 28, 1973, is an American entrepreneur and the co-founder and CEO of 23andMe, a personal genomics company. She started the company in 2006 with Linda Avey and Paul Cusenza, aiming to make genetic information accessible to the public. The company provides DNA testing kits that offer insights into ancestry, health risks, and genetic traits. Wojcicki, was born in Palo Alto, California, and practically grew up on Stanford University's campus, where her father taught. She has two sisters: Susan Wojcicki, former CEO of YouTube, and Janet Wojcicki, an anthropologist. Wojcicki attended Gunn High School, where she was involved in sports and edited the school newspaper. She later studied biology at Yale University, graduating in 1996. After college, Anne worked as a health care consultant and investment analyst, focusing on biotechnology companies. Disillusioned with Wall Street's approach to health care, she decided to focus on biological research. In 2006, Wojcicki co-founded 23andMe with Avey and Cusenza. The company provides direct-to-consumer DNA testing kits that offer insights into ancestry, health risks, and genetic traits. The name "23andMe" refers to the 23 pairs of chromosomes in a typical human cell. The company's personal genome test kit was named "Invention of the Year" by Time magazine in 2008. At 23andMe, Anne's goal is to revolutionize health care by providing easy access to genetic information. Under Wojcicki's leadership, 23andMe has gained FDA approval for various health-related tests, including those for cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, certain cancers, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and celiac disease. In 2018, the company partnered with GlaxoSmithKline to develop new medicines, backed by a $300 million investment. Anne married Google co-founder Sergey Brin in 2007 (2007-2013), and they have two children together. Together, they run the Brin Wojcicki Foundation, which has donated extensively to causes like the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. As Wojcicki is so involved in philanthropy, she joined The Giving Pledge in 2022, committed to donating most of her wealth. In 2020, Wojcicki was ranked 93rd on Forbes' list of the World's 100 Most Powerful Women. The following year, she joined the board of Cazoo and took 23andMe public through a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company, earning her the title of "newest self-made billionaire" from Forbes.
