1997 - Today

Date Added:

Jorja Alice Smith, born June 11, 1997, is an English singer from Walsall, West midlands who is a very popular artist and well acclaimed for her strides and innovation in R&B and Pop collaborating with themes of Reggae. Born to a Jamaican father and English mother, her father Peter was a former musician who sang in a Neo Soul group called 2nd Naicha prior to Jorja being born. From a young age she was encouraged by her father to pick up instruments and she began taking piano lessons at 8 years old. From there she received a music scholarship from Aldridge School, a secondary school in English studying classical singing as well as music for her A-level exams. At 15 years old while still studying, Smith got scouted by record producers after posting cover songs on YouTube. Shortly after being scouted, Smith would begin traveling back and forth to London for writing sessions with Ed Thomas and Maverick Sabre while still being a student. After graduation, she moved to London at 18 to fully pursue her songwriting aspirations. A year later Jorja debuted with two singles, “Blue Lights” and “Where Did I Go”, both garnering hundreds of thousand of plays even being praised by major name artist Drake for her talent. With the exposure, Smith caught the attention of Guy Moot, an executive at Sony/ATV who signed her to a publishing deal later the same year. From there Smith released a four-track debut extended play, titled Project 11. Throughout her career she has worked and collaborated with many big-name artists to name a few, Drake, Kali Uchis, Brunos Mars, Kendrick Lamar, and Burna Boy. Utilizing her own spin on R&B to elevate the featured songs. In 2020, Smith began hosting a 12-part show called “Tearjerker”, where she focuses on the healing properties of music and what it can provide for you. Jorja Smith and her career thus far is a testament to the power of dedication and talent. Quickly becoming a global sensation at such a young age and not letting that opportunity slip away truly showcases a level of preserverance making Jorja Smith an inspiration for female artists worldwide.
