Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, more popularly known as Chappell Roan, is a twenty-six-year-old singer-song writer from Willard, Missouri. Her style of music is a mix of 80s synth pop, and her personal style is influenced by drag queens. Chappell grew up in a very conservative Christian town and household, and oftentimes felt different to her peers. At the age of about 11, she started playing the piano and started lessons when she was 12. When she was 13, she performed at a school recital and won. This gave her confidence in her musical ability and after this win she started releasing covers onto YouTube. At the age of 17, she released the song “Die Young”, which gained the attention of Atlantic Records and got her signed onto their label. In 2018, Chappell moved to Los Angeles and finally felt comfortable and accepted in her queerness. This caused a big change in her music and personal style, making her a lot “campier”. However, this joy did not last for long as she got dropped by her label and broken up with in the same week during August 2020. After that, she moved back to Missouri and worked odd jobs and spent her free time making music. In October 2020, she moved back to Los Angeles and continued working odd jobs and landed a production deal with Sony that allowed her to continue producing music again. In 2022, she independently released “Femininomenon” and “Casual”, which were loved by many. She also opened for Olivia Rodrigo during her “Sour” tour, which helped get her name out. Eventually, in 2023, Chappell signed with Island Records and released her debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”. Chappell Roan is an amazing example of why we should never quit on our dreams. Despite the setbacks and disappointments, she kept doing what she loved and succeeded. Personally, Chappell gives me courage to be unapologetically queer, creative and reminds me that hard work and consistency do pay off.
