Nila Ibrahimi is a young 16-year-old activist that escaped the harsh realities of Afghanistan. After the Taliban's took control of the nation in 2021, Ibrahimi escaped a few days later with the initiative of the 30Birds Foundation. Using her newly found freedom, Ibrahimi is determined to raise awareness about the struggle for girls and women's education rights in Afghanistan. Growing up, Ibrahimi always had a deep passion for music, she was a part of the Sound of Afghanistan where they sung about issues, women's rights being the most prominent. Hence, when the discriminatory order banning schoolgirls over the age of 12 from singing in public, you can tell how distraught these individuals would've felt, especially young, Nila Ibrahimi. Courageously, Nila posted a video message through Song encouraging young girls to stand up for their education and their rights. Her video gained monumental social media support, and it brought about a protest. This resulted in a reversal of the Directorate's ban. Unfortunately, not long after that in August of 2021, the Taliban took control rendering her a target due to her online notoriety as an activist. Nila and her family decided to flee their country and traveled alongside members of the Hazara community to Pakistan with the help of the 30Birds Foundation. After reaching their safe house in Pakistan and hiding for a year, Ibrahimi and her family were able to relocate to Saskatoon, Canada, where they currently reside. Today, Nila Ibrahimi continues to use her voice as an activist, and she uses her freedom to voice the oppression of Afghan girls and Hazaras left under the Taliban's rule. As previously mentioned, Ibrahimi is a member of the Sound of Afghanistan Music Band, and she often raises the focus of the injustice by advocating for women's rights, peace and humanity through the group. Nila speaks at various recognized organizations; in 2023, she spoke at the U.N opening of 15th Annual Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy. Her speech shed light on her story and her determination as a young activist to make a difference. Ibrahimi created a platform called HerStory, which is an initiative taken in order to have girls share their life stories of "courage, resilience and hope." Her actions as an activist have helped to build awareness of Afghan girls.
