Ingibjörg H. Bjarnason, born December 14, 1867, was an Icelandic politician, suffragist, schoolteacher, and gymnast. She was the first woman to become a member of the Althing, Iceland's parliament. Bjarnason was born in Thingeyri, Iceland, but she later moved to Reykjavík and attended the Reykjavík Women's College. After studying gymnastics in Denmark, she returned to teach in Reykjavík and eventually became the school's principal, in which she held this position for 35 years until she died in 1941. Ingibjörg was a prominent figure in the Icelandic women's suffrage movement, and in 1915, she addressed parliament upon Icelandic women winning the right to vote. Ingibjörg presented a celebratory speech, and was elected the head of a committee which raised funds to build a hospital, Landspítali (the National University Hospital) to commemorate the suffragists' win. Ingibjörg led the Women's Slate, and was elected to the Althing in 1922. Through this, she promoted women's and children's rights throughout her political career. Despite criticism for her alignment with the Conservative Party, she remained active in the women's liberation movement until her death. In her honor, a permanent memorial was constructed in Reykjavík in 2011, and a celebration was held in the Althing in 2012 to commemorate her election.
