Cai Chang was a Chinese feminist, educator, and political activist born in 1900 in Jiangsu Province, China. She played a pivotal role in the Chinese feminist movement during the early 20th century. Cai Chang's activism focused on advocating for women's rights, particularly in the areas of education and social equality. Her achievements were diverse and numerous. Cai Chang co-founded the Women's Rights Recovery Association in 1912 with the goal of advancing women's involvement in public life and gender equality. She also founded the Zhonghua Women's Vocational School in Shanghai which offers women skill development and vocational training. The influence of Cai Chang on Chinese society was profound so in 1925, Cai quit her position as a teacher to be employed by the Nationalist Party's Central Women's Department. After joining the Central Women's Committee two years later, she contributed to the creation of the 1930 Marriage Decree, which stated that "free choice must be the basic principle of every marriage." In 1931, she contributed to the writing of the Provisional Constitution. Amongst all of her achievements, Cai Chang was instrumental in advocating for women's suffrage during the early years of the Republic of China. Her work with the ACWF included developing a plan to assist well-off women in taking the lead in advances in science and culture. She was also instrumental in the growth of women's organizations and publications, giving women a forum to express their issues and fight for their rights. Cai Chang's legacy as a pioneering feminist and social reformer continues to live on around the world. She passed away in 1990, but her contributions to the advancement of women's rights in China remain an integral part of its history.
