Princess Lalla Salma born Salma Bennani often called “Princess Salma”, is the princess consort of Morocco. She is the wife of King Mohammed VI and the first wife of a Moroccan ruler to have been publicly acknowledged and given a royal title. The Moroccan Princess was born in Fes to an upper middle class family. Princess Salma was educated in Rabat, where she attended a private school, Lycée Hassan II and later the National School of Computer Science and Systems Analysis. Following her graduation, she worked for Omnium North Africa, Morocco’s largest private corporation. A few years later in 2002, she was married to the King of Morocco Mohammed VI. She is an advocate for cancer prevention, founding the “Lalla Salma Association Against Cancer Foundation” in 2005 and supporting several cancer prevention foundations in the country. The Lalla Salma Foundation is working to set up a national plan dedicated to fighting cancer, which will apply the best clinical practices, by implementing a strategy using an innovative and participative approach adapted to the specificities of the country. The Moroccan Princess is the World Health Organization Goodwill Ambassador for the promotion of prevention and cancer care. She was recently awarded the International Union against Cancer Special Representative position for the “Today’s children, tomorrow’s world” campaign. She is also involved with AIDS prevention in Africa and women’s empowerment. In December of 2008, Princess Lalla was awarded the highest decoration in Senegal, the Grande Croix de l’Ordre national du mérité, because of her humanitarian work in Morocco and abroad.
